Sci-fi fanatics have been invited to help break the world record for the largest ever gathering of Daleks. Skip related content

The National Space Centre in Leicester said it is staging the record attempt to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Dr Who's stair-hating baddies.

It has joined forces with Project Dalek and the Dalek Builders' Guild for the bid on Saturday, and more than 40 people in Dalek costumes are already confirmed to attend.

The current record is held by the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry with a frightening 70, said the centre.

National Space Centre spokeswoman Malika Andress reassured any potential record-breakers, saying: "The National Space Centre is completely Dalek-accessible."

She said Guinness World Records will count an individual as a Dalek if they are recognisable as one of the stars of the long-running BBC TV series.

Some authors are obvious for including on any such list.

Some of the modern ones listed surprised me though . I am not sure they can really be seen as being sci-fi at all, i.e. Harry Potter?

Steven Moffat the new producer said it would be good to see the show at cinemas as long as it was "great and fantastic".
The last 'Movie' stared Paul McGann as the Doctor but failed to recreate the intensity of the TV series. I remembered queuing up to see the movie versions in the 1960's but these lacked continuity with the TV series and were individual episodes dealing with the Daleks. The first movie 'Doctor Who and the Daleks' in fact was a larger version of an original episodic serial 'The Dead Planet' first aired in 1963.

But if there was to a movie who should be the monster or villain? The Daleks have now been overused, the Cybermen lack the drawing power.

Another aspect that needs addressing is who would direct it? I am aware that both Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson are both massive Doctor Who fans, could they be tempted?

One aspect I noted with interest was the 'grittiness' that has been added especially the depiction of gore and violence. Presumably they have to compete with the likes of Battlestar Galactica, Bionic Woman and Sarah Connor Chronicles which have focused on a more adult audience.

I must admit it was a welcome return to a still popular show but wonder how much further they can take the Wraith story line before it gets a little staid and boring and continuing with a theme it is about time the Replicators were but out to roost as they return later in the series.
One added bonus is the addition of Dr Daniel Jackson mid series but I bid a fond farewell to Colonel Carter (Amanda Tapping) who is off to star in the new SciFi series Sanctuary as Dr. Helen Magnus.

I must admit they are so bad I haven't heard of any of them.

At number 5:
Ulysses Solomon Archer

Better know as US1, Ulysses was the younger of two sons of a pair of truck drivers. When their parents were killed in a wreck, the two brothers were informally adopted by Poppa Wheelie and Wide Load Annie. A group of aliens came to Earth, seeking to recruit people to become starship pilots. They chose truckers, because of their experience with the solitude of the open road. The aliens outfit Ulysses truck with advanced technology and trained him in its use. They also implant a large metal plate in his skull which enables him to pick up Citizen's Band (C transmissions--his "CB Skull." He can also use it to control his own truck/ship.

At number 4:
The Red Bee

Rick Raleigh fights crime during the day as assistant district attorney of Superior City and fights crime... also during the day as the Red Bee, scourge of the underworld!
He secret power was the control of bees which he released from his utility belt to attack the bad guys.

At number 3:
The Whizzer

Robert Frank is on a trip to Africa with his father, Dr. Emil Frank, where Robert is bitten by a cobra. Dr. Frank saves Robert by a transfusion of mongoose blood, and soon discovers that he has developed super-speed.

At number 2:
The Elongated Man

Ralph Dibny was a regular guy who invented a secret formula that made his body super-elastic. Ralph discovered that all the rubber-men in the world drank a soda called Gingold. Apparently Gingold is only drunk by circus freaks and other outcasts of society (presumably where we get 'being on a bender').

Finally at number 1:
The Black Condor

Thomas Wright was a Senator of the United States; who liked to dress up like an exotic male prostitute to fight crime and Nazis as the amazing Black Condor.
Lost as a child in Mongolia Thomas was originally Richard Grey and was raised by condors. Richard was found by a hermit and returned to America. He then uncovers a plot to kill Senator Thomas Wright but fails to save him and ends up stealing his identity.

 Comments

Toucha Toucha Toucha Touch me

After 30 years the Rocky Horror Picture Show is to be remade.
But who would you have in the lead roles?

Me? I would choose:

Brad - Ewan McGregor?
Janet - Nicole Kidman?

Dr. Frank-N-Furter - Rupert Everett?
Riff Raff - Russell Brand?
Magenta - Helen Bonham Carter?
Dr. Everett Von Scott - Stephen Fry?

 Comments
